Learn more about the Pixelate Image

Pixelate Part of an Image, Free

Upload a PNG, JPG, WebP, or GIF, then drag to select one or more rectangular areas. Each selection is shrunk down significantly and scaled back up using nearest-neighbor rendering — the standard pixelation technique — so the region turns into large, blocky, unreadable squares. Adjust the block size per region from small (subtle) to large (heavily blocked).

Everything runs locally via the Canvas API — your image is never uploaded to a server. Like blur, pixelation is a visual effect: at a coarse enough setting it's effectively unreadable, but it isn't secure redaction and shouldn't be relied on for information that must never be recoverable. For that, use Redact Image to replace the pixels outright with a solid fill instead.

When to Pixelate an Image

The Classic Censoring Look

Pixelation is instantly recognizable as "this was hidden on purpose" — useful for faces or license plates in a screenshot.

Obscure a Face or Detail

Reduce a region to large color blocks so the original content is no longer recognizable at normal viewing size.

Stylistic Reveal

A coarser pixelation can hint at content (for a "reveal" or thumbnail) without fully showing it.

Adjustable Block Size

A Small-to-Large pixel size slider per selected region.

No Server Upload

Pixelation runs via the Canvas API in your browser — the image is never sent anywhere.

Download in Any Format

Export the result as PNG, JPG, or WebP, at the original image resolution.

Pixelation is a visual effect, not secure redaction. For sensitive information you need to permanently hide — documents, screenshots, private messages, IDs — use Redact Image instead.

FAQ

Is this image pixelation tool free?

Yes, it is completely free to use with no limits, signup, or account required.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. Pixelation runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image is never uploaded or sent to a server.

How do I pixelate part of an image?

Upload an image, then click and drag on it to select a rectangular area. Drag the selection to move it, drag a corner handle to resize it, and adjust the Pixel Size slider — do this for as many areas as you need.

How does the pixelation algorithm work?

Each selected region is scaled down significantly, then scaled back up to its original size using nearest-neighbor rendering — the same technique used for the classic blocky censoring look, rather than a blur.

Is pixelating an image secure enough to permanently hide sensitive information?

No. Like blur, pixelation is a visual effect, not secure redaction. For information that must be permanently unreadable, use Redact Image instead, which replaces the pixels outright.

Can I undo a pixelation or remove a selection?

Yes. Undo steps back through your edits one at a time, Reset clears every selection, and each selection also has its own delete button.

What format does the pixelated image download as?

Choose PNG, JPG, or WebP at download time, at the image's original resolution, with an adjustable quality setting for JPG/WebP.
