Convert Between Images and .ico, Free

This tool converts in both directions: turn a PNG or JPG into a proper multi-resolution Windows .ico file (for a desktop app icon, an installer, or anywhere a raw .ico is needed — not a full web favicon kit), or unpack an existing .ico to see and download every resolution it contains as separate PNGs. Everything runs locally via the Canvas API — nothing is uploaded to a server.

Need a full favicon set with PNG sizes, a manifest, and a <head> snippet instead? Use the Favicon Generator.

Features

Image to .ico

Upload a PNG or JPG and pick which sizes to embed — 16, 32, 48, and 256px — in a single .ico file.

.ico to Images

Upload an existing .ico and see every embedded resolution, ready to preview and download individually.

Choose Your Sizes

Don't need all four resolutions? Toggle any combination on or off before generating.

Classic & Modern .ico Support

Reads both older BMP-in-ICO icons (with palettes down to 1-bit) and modern PNG-in-ICO icons.

No Server Upload

Every conversion runs via the Canvas API in your browser — nothing is ever sent anywhere.

Bulk or Single Download

Download the packed .ico directly, or every extracted PNG at once as a .zip.

How to use

  1. Paste or type your content in the input editor on the left.
  2. The formatted output is generated automatically.
  3. Use Copy, Download, or other actions from the output toolbar.

FAQ

Is this ICO converter free?

Yes, it is completely free to use with no limits, signup, or account required.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. Both directions of conversion run entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your file is never uploaded or sent to a server.

Which sizes can I embed when converting an image to .ico?

Toggle any combination of 16×16, 32×32, 48×48, and 256×256 — all four are selected by default.

Does my source image need to be square?

It's recommended, since .ico icons are conventionally square. If it isn't, the tool center-crops it to a square automatically rather than stretching it or blocking generation.

What kinds of .ico files can it read?

Both modern icons (which embed plain PNG data per size) and classic pre-Vista icons (which embed a raw BMP/DIB bitmap plus a transparency mask, at bit depths from 1-bit to 32-bit) are supported.

How is this different from the Favicon Generator?

The Favicon Generator produces a full web favicon kit — every standard PNG size, a manifest, and a <head> snippet. This tool is narrower: just the raw image-to-ico format conversion in both directions, useful for things like a desktop app icon that has nothing to do with a website.

Can I download extracted images individually instead of all at once?

Yes. Each embedded resolution has its own Download PNG button, alongside a Download All (.zip) option for grabbing everything at once.
